It’s been quite some time since I last updated here! My goodness! I’m in France right now on vacation and was taking a trip down memory lane….Amy is doing good though back home in Michigan! I still haven’t held her yet because I’m nervous. But she’s not dead so that’s always good! One of the antlions has died since the last update. But otherwise everyone is alive~

Sorry I haven’t posted! Senior year of highschool got me busy. Now I’ll be going to college! Maybe I’ll post my adventures here again. Since I’ll be taking science classes and studying entomology ;)

Argh! i’ve developed a serious problem with feeding Amy. I get startled whenever she attacks ever since I was holding my brothers mouse and it bit me…so I’m afraid to handle or feed her now…..She nearly escaped today because she bit the mealworm and then I flinched and…

The problem is I AM using forceps! But I jump when she bites at them to get her food and i shoulldn’t and it’s stupid and I know it’s like a bee sting and asdfghjkl; gods help me.

Just keep doing what you’re doing then, and I’m sure you’ll habituate again after a while. Right now your subconscious is going “oh crap a bitey thing is biting” because you were recently bitten by a bitey thing but eventually it will realize “wait the bitey thing… is not biting me? ok”

Just give it time I think

hmm. Thanks mon ami! That’s reassuring….I’ll work through it I’m sure :)
Enough for tonight though T-T
(The fact that exams were today and I’m tired and stressed from that probably doesn’t help)

I get startled whenever she attacks ever since I was holding my brothers mouse and it bit me…so I’m afraid to handle or feed her now…..She nearly escaped today because she bit the mealworm and then I flinched and she fell (safely) onto the cage door and almost crawled behind the dresser she sits on. Any advice for not flinching and being so afraid? I didn’t have the problem until the darn mouse bit me….

Anyway Amy is fine and well after her molt (hungry)
No other news to report.

Big news!

11/9/13

Amy molted!
I can’t find her abdomen piece (irritating me as I wanted to check her gender) or one of the chelicerae…but otherwise it’s all there :)
She’s currently resting in her tree hallow with her super fluffy new legs :)
I’ll get a picture later, I don’t wanna disturb her now, well, any more than I already did to get her molt out.

My Antlion is still alive and well. He’s stopped making the little pits for the most part and is really fat. I imagine he’ll become a pupa soon or hibernate or something I don’t know.

Recluse is dead
He wasn’t eating…I didn’t think he was in his final molt though!
I thought he was planning to molt…
He was a male. I thought he had 1 or 2 good molts left in him…
Goodbye Recluse…I hardly knew yah.

Should I get his body put into a piece of jewelry? Or just bury him?
Thoughts?

aw, sorry to hear it.

Spiders are even more fragile in death than in life. I’m not sure his body would stay intact as a piece of jewelry unless you encased him in resin or something, which could be very interesting (and very doable considering his size). Even then, I’m not sure what will happen after the resin. It may not look good, his body may still decay and fall apart… and there’s no going back once it’s done.

If you decide against something like that, you could always preserve him in alcohol, which is the “proper” preservation method. 190-proof Everclear, if you can get it, is probably the best you could do. Regular rubbing alcohol works too, but not nearly as well.

I found a guy online who puts the spider or insect in resin but my Mom doesn’t want to waste money on it :/
(I would have to put Recluse in rubbing alcohol and mail him to the person and pay like 50 dollars plus shipping)

Maybe do it yourself? Can’t cost THAT much, especially if you’ve got some legos on hand.

Err. I’m not sure. A craftsman I ain’t. It would come out looking awful…I can’t handle the simplest of things crafts wise unfortunatly.

Alcohol might be your best bet, then.

Unless… hm… I would be willing to do it for you, if resin isn’t too expensive and you’re willing to pay for the shipping and send him my way. You’d still have to preserve him in alcohol in the meantime, but I won’t charge you the additional $50.

this is all if resin isn’t horribly expensive.

That would be really nice actually :)
If resin isn’t too expensive that is..
